Da Family

You guys have read a lot about my beloved Jack. It's now time to introduce my brothers: Brady and Tom. They both channel this type of excellence, if not the same haircuts.

Our family's blood runs blue and gold and while I hate that expression, it's true. Brady and Tom (and my Dad, Lou) go out to the ND football games up to eight hours before game time. They have their rituals, see the sights and sounds on campus, and of course, Jack and I usually join them at the tailgates. We even have a motto: What happens at the tailgate stays at the tailgate.

My brothers keep me on my toes. They're a bit younger than me...I taught them how to play Knock-Out and how to hit baseballs and they continually joke about how I look like a librarian when I wear my glasses or nurtured a (former) obsession with Donkey Kong and Mario. This banter highlights any family function and it's a good safeguard against arrogance. They all knew me when I was a pipsqueak on the video yearbook staff, when I got in trouble for not eating spinach, and when I accidentally flung ice cream across the room at (multiple) birthday parties.

Family is good like that; it keeps me grounded. I find that I can truly be myself around my family. Families have to accept you, it's in the job description! SkyBlue (my mom) is a devotee of Family Dinner Day. The last time SkyBlue and Lou hosted Family Dinner Day, I got to grill Brady and Tom about their grades and social lives and they, in turn, challenged me to a championship Knock-Out game. Which I lost. It was the end of an era!

But hey, I guess losing a FOOTBALL game to Brady and Tom would have been a wee bit more embarrassing!
