Nurse Jackie was in rare form today. She has this weird habit of standing to the side of my desk (instead of in the door frame, like all other people). She frequently asks me to ghost write job promotions and announcements and other things that are a bit sensitive for PR. She was halfway standing over me, giving me a few tidbits for this ghost writing and her pager goes off. The number she was paged to was MY number. She said, "Dude, did you page me?" (yes, she said "dude"). I looked up from my notepad, rolling my eyes, and said a quick, "Oh yes, that's why I'm talking to you right now." We laughed, figuring it was a mistake, but ten minutes later, the page came through again. I looked at her skeptically and said, "I was right here! I swear!"
An hour later, I had to go to the other hospital campus, where I quickly paged her to my phone. This time it WAS me and I was just messing with her. Laughing at my own immaturity in annoying the Chief Nursing Officer, I dashed off to my meeting. Next thing I know, my pager's going off every minute. SIX people paged me in the span of five minutes. She got me back and I wonder how she knew the last time I actually was joking around.
And YES, we're busy and this is what we do to relieve the tremendous pressure. And probably why healthcare is so darn expensive!
